1 Alwyne Place, Islington

Alterations were carried out with a new rear extension and roof terrace to a large mid-19th century semi-detached house within a conservation area. The new construction is in proximity to a number of large trees. The design of the foundation is in accordance with NHBC guidance for “buildings near trees”. In order to avoid undermining the existing footings along the rear wall and the party wall, three localised pad footings away from the existing walls were proposed.

Campana Road, Fullum

Alterations and extension of this Victorian 19th century mid-terraced house with the removal of most of the internal walls at ground and 1st floor levels to the rear part of the house. A new steel structure was constructed to support the walls above where loads are transferred onto new foundations. To avoid undermining the existing footings and surcharging the existing drain, the ground floor slab cantilevers over pad or strip foundations constructed away from the existing walls.

1 Bloomsbury Square, London

Refurbishment of an existing five storey Grade II* listed house and the construction of a new internal lift between ground and third floor. Reinforced concrete ring beams are provided to the lift shaft ensuring stability to the new structure and to transfer lateral loads from the lift fixings. At third floor level the existing roof void is to be converted to a habitable space. New steel beams are provided to support the timber stud wall and joists are doubled up to increase the load capacity of the floor.
