Stand Consulting Engineers was formed by Stuart Tappin in 2007 to provide structural engineering expertise on new and historic buildings. The practice has over 25 years of design experience in the UK and overseas.

Our key projects have ranged from carrying out structural appraisals of existing buildings and world heritage sites; repair, restorations and alterations to listed buildings and churches; design of new basements under and adjacent to existing structures; and the design of new multi-storey commercial offices.

The practice has a keen interest in art and architecture and regularly visits galleries, buildings and historic towns. We believe that our awareness and appreciation beyond engineering can help develop and achieve a better design solution. We occasionally collaborate with architects to enter design competitions and enjoy the challenges and the exchange of creative ideas.

BSc MA MIStructE

Stuart has a deep understanding of the special issues relating to historic buildings, scheduled monuments and buildings within conservation areas.

He has lectured on building conservation at Bath, Canterbury, South Bank and De Montfort Universities, the British Council in Delhi, West Dean College and to the national amenity societies. He is a member of the 20th Century Society Casework Committee, ICOMOS (UK) Structures Committee and the World Monument Fundís UK Architectural Advisory Committee. He sits on the ICOMOS International Scientific Committee on 20th Century Heritage where part of his role is to link with TICCIH, The International Committee for the Conservation of the Industrial Heritage.

Stuart obtained a Distinction in his part-time MA degree in Art and Architecture from the School of Oriental and African Studies at the University of London in 2001. As part of his studies he researched the structural development of domes in India and the early use of reinforced concrete in India. His studies reflect a desire to explore beyond the usual boundaries of engineering. Following his course he has worked for the Aga Khan Trust for Culture in India and in Egypt.

Between 2002 and 2014 he was the Chair of the Tenants and Residents Association at the Brunswick Centre, a listed 1960s building.  He has written many articles on engineering conservation and had written for Grand Designs magazine regularly over a two year period.   In 2005 he contributed to a TV documentary for the History Channel on Mughal buildings.

Principal Structrual Engineer

Angela graduated with a degree in Civil Engineering with First Class Honours from the University of Bath. She is a Chartered Engineer with over thirteen year's experience.

She has worked on a wide range of projects where she gained technical skills in the civil engineering and building sectors.  Her experiences ranges from the design of bridges and tunnels, new build commercial developments and schools, to the refurbishment of prisons and residential private houses.   She also has experience in working on listed buildings and has worked with Stuart Tappin previously prior to joining him at Stand consulting Engineers in June 2009.

She started managing her own projects and resources around the year 2005 where she was the key design engineer for her projects.  To widen her knowledge outside the field of engineering she completed a part-time Master degree in Business Administration in 2012 from the University of Wesminister with Distinction. She is able to apply her knowledge in the running of the office and to manage her resources more effectively.
